Hello,

With the thermostat in Houston acting like a pendulum, where any given day’s weather could swing between frigid lows or balmy highs, our community is facing the annual onslaught of winter health concerns—the common cold, flu, COVID-19 and many other respiratory diseases.

St. Luke’s Health is well-prepared to provide compassionate care and information about how to keep yourself and your colleagues healthy as we all try to navigate schools, workplaces and other gatherings. Throughout this cold and flu season, our healthcare professionals are available to do screenings and provide informational sessions for businesses and organizations.

Humankindness — Toward Ourselves

As 2023 came to a close, many of us resolved to make 2024 an overall healthier year.

Yet, we all know how hard it can be to stick to those goals. If you are struggling to keep up with your own expectations, it might be time to practice some self-compassion and reframe your thinking.

The best remedy to get back on track is to be kind to yourself. Take a breath. It is always hard to try something new, so it’s reasonable to expect some setbacks. What’s most important is that you keep trying.

Bolstering Your Health Benefits

When is the last time you took a good, hard look at your employee health benefits?

St. Luke’s Health is proud to include all major insurance carriers in our network, but if there are elements of your plans that you’d like to talk about potentially improving, please do not hesitate to respond to this email. We would be glad to set up some time with one of our team members to see how we can help you, your employees, and your family take charge of your health.

Transplant Success

63-year-old Larry Nesler was in dire need of a new lung and liver. Dual organ transplant surgery is considered high-risk for patients over 50 years of age. Despite his age, the transplant team at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center was confident they could perform the complex surgery with success. Now, Larry gets to continue spending his days with family and friends.

Cardiology Care

Lakeisha Brown knew something wasn't right when she started experiencing chest tightness and shortness of breath at night. Thankfully, she met with the expert heart care team at Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center who made the correct diagnosis and implanted a heart device that saved her life.

Brain Infection

Francisco Laso developed a life-threatening brain abscess following sinus surgery in his home country of Ecuador. He obtained an international remote second opinion from the neurosurgical team at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center, which developed an emergency surgical plan.  Forty-eight hours later, Francisco was undergoing brain surgery in Houston. Just six weeks after the operation, Francisco was back at work full-time and spending time with his loved ones.
