Amy Bolin's Story
Amy Bolin is preparing for the Katy Half-Marathon on February 7 with 10-mile runs. “I’m doing this for my husband and to raise awareness about the need for organ donations,” she shared. “He wakes up every morning and puts a smile on his face and heads off to work.”
Her husband, Bobby, is a St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center double-lung transplant patient on the waiting list for organs. Since his 20s, he has suffered from autoimmune-related illness and rheumatoid arthritis. After an especially difficult bout with pneumonia last February, Bobby was placed on the transplant list in April 2014.
Amy and Bobby’s children know of their father’s condition. The couple felt it was important for them to understand. “When we first told them about the transplant list, our youngest son was eight years old. During his bedtime prayers, he would say, ‘we pray for the family who will lose someone they love to help someone we love.’ Bobby and I held it together until we left his bedroom and then fell into each other’s arms,” Amy said.
Motivated by the same determination she sees in her husband, Amy has spent the last several months preparing for the Katy Half-Marathon and fundraising. Her team of seven has raised several hundred dollars for the Lung Transplant Program at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Now her husband and daughter want to walk it with “oxygen bottle in tow” for Bobby. Inspired by their commitment, members of the Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center Transplant Team plan to attend the Katy Half-Marathon to cheer on the Bolin family.
