Patients Medical Center Earns Five-Star Rating from CMS for Excellence in Quality Care
PASADENA (February 3, 2020) - St. Luke’s Health—Patients Medical Center (Patients Medical Center) has achieved a five-star quality rating from the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). CMS assigned star ratings to more than 4,500 hospitals nationwide based on their performance across seven areas of quality. Patients Medical Center was one of only 407 hospitals nationwide to earn five stars and one of only 37 hospitals in Texas to receive the top rating.
Five stars is the highest rating a hospital can receive through the Hospital Compare overall rating scale. Publicly reported on the Medicare.gov website, the overall rating scale utilizes individual hospital data from up to 57 quality measures across seven quality group categories, including mortality, safety of care, readmission, patient experience, effectiveness of care, timeliness of care, and efficient use of medical imaging.
“The 5-Star designation by CMS is a significant achievement given to only a few hospitals,” said Steven Foster, president, Patients Medical Center. “The rating underlines the work of our dedicated caregivers at St. Luke’s Health—Patients Medical Center with respect to patient satisfaction, timely care, patient safety and overall cost of care.”
The ratings are designed to help the U.S. government share data with the public simply and consistently and help healthcare consumers compare hospitals based on standardized quality measures. According to CMS, better outcomes mean more stars, and the most common overall hospital rating is three stars.
Hospital Compare was created by CMS to assist patients and their families when making decisions about where to receive healthcare. Additionally, the program encourages hospitals to improve the quality of care provided through on-going monitoring of quality data.
