Serving the Homeless, One Meal at a Time

Life can be harsh for people without a home, and where the next meal comes from seems a perpetual riddle.

But at least on this Sunday morning on July 31 at Trinity Episcopal Church, 250 homeless residents had a taste of home where a warm breakfast was a reminder of what it’s like to be cared for and where dignity is affirmed – thanks to the church and our St. Luke’s leadership team.

The team gathered in the early morning to help serve breakfast for the homeless residents who are mostly found around midtown and downtown Houston. Every Sunday, many of them come to the church, 1015 Holman St., for morning service and an ensuing hearty breakfast.

“It was a perfect opportunity for us to volunteer here,” said Michael Sullivan, Director of St. Luke’s Healthy Communities. “We served breakfast, restaurant style, to each individual at table. This is likely the only time during the week when these individuals don’t have to stand in line for food.”

The volunteer initiative, spearheaded by the Healthy Communities team, is part of our organization’s efforts to visibly live our Mission, Sullivan said. He noted that part of the CHI Mission affirms that ‘fidelity to the Gospel urges us to emphasize human dignity and social justice as we foster health and well-being.”
