More than 120 golfers supported a cause with a heart at this year’s St. Luke’s Foundation Heart Golf Classic and were treated to an appearance from 1983 PGA champ Hal Sutton, who gave plenty of tips to the golfers. Proceeds from the tournament benefit the Heart Exchange Support Group, which provides transplant patients and their families with financial, educational and emotional support. This year’s event also benefits Nora’s Home – an affordable, home-like environment for families to stay during the long treatment and recovery process. Heart transplant survivor Ally Smith-Babineaux, known as the Bionic Bride, moved guests with her personal story during the awards ceremony. An innovative heart pump kept her alive so she could walk down the aisle for her wedding and she subsequently had two heart transplants at St. Luke’s Health–Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center. Her cardiologist, Roberta Bogaev, MD, and O. H. “Bud” Frazier, MD, Chief of Transplant Services at Baylor St. Luke’s and Chief of Cardiopulmonary Transplantation at Texas Heart® Institute, also briefly spoke on advances in transplant medicine.
