Day of Procedure
Every patient is unique, and your physician will be most familiar with your particular needs. Therefore, it’s important to follow your physician’s instructions. The following routine, however, is typical of what you should do prior to a procedure:
- Eating and Drinking
Do NOT eat or drink anything after midnight the day of your procedure or as specified by your physician. Remember NOT to swallow water when brushing your teeth. - Bathing
The night before or morning of your procedure, bathe or shower as usual. Your doctor may ask that you use antiseptic soap. Refrain from using perfumes, fragrant lotions or powders. - Valuables
Please do NOT bring valuables, such as jewelry, wallets, purses or personal items to the hospital. - Clothing
Wear loose-fitting clothes or pajamas and a robe. Shorts are recommended for knee surgery. - Medications
Give to your physician a list of all medications taken regularly, including herbal supplements and vitamins. During your stay at the hospital, all medications needed and ordered by your physician will be provided to you. - Smoking
Limit or abstain from smoking before your procedure. Smoking is not permitted on St. Luke's Health premises. - Illness
Notify your physician if you develop a sore throat, cold, fever or other symptoms prior to your procedure.
After Your Procedure
- Recovery
After a procedure, patients who have been given a general anesthetic awaken under observation in the post-anesthesia care unit. Staff and your anesthesia provider will monitor your vital signs. The average recovery time is one to two hours. Depending on your physician’s orders, you may be discharged or admitted to St. Luke's Health. - Discharge
For health and safety reasons, you will NOT be allowed to drive yourself home following your procedure. Please make arrangements for someone to drive you home. It’s also strongly advised that you arrange to have someone stay with you for 24 hours following your discharge from St. Luke's Health.
You will be provided a set of instructions and a phone number to call in the event you have additional questions or concerns. Remember to follow all instructions carefully to ensure a quick and safe recovery. A St. Luke's Health representative will contact you 24 to 48 hours after your discharge regarding your recovery.
For immediate medical attention following discharge, call 9-1-1.
