Recognize the Signs of a Stroke
In the United States, stroke is the fifth leading cause of death with one person dying every four minutes, and stroke is the leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Recognizing the signs of a stroke and acting quickly can help save your life, or the life of someone else.
What is a Stroke?
A stroke occurs when there is sudden bleeding in the brain or a blockage of blood and oxygen flow to the brain. Without a flow of oxygen to the brain, brain cells begin to die, which can create long-term disabling effects.
Signs of a Stroke
Use the acronym F.A.S.T. to spot the signs of a stroke quickly. In the event of a stroke, it’s important to get to the nearest certified stroke center or emergency room as quickly as possible to reduce the risk of fatality or long-term disability. Time lost equals brain lost.
